Welcome to Gems Class!

Hello children and parents welcome to our Gems class page.

Spring Term 2015
This week, we have been learning about Chinese New Year. Look our photos below.
Trying on Chinese clothes.
Firstly, welcome to our new starters this term.

The last two weeks we've been thinking about winter. We've explored ice, thought about dressing up warm when we go outside and how to warm up when we are cold. We have been on a frosty winter walk and observed sparkly leaves, crunchy, hard grass, shiny, slippery logs and felt our feet getting colder!

Hello children and parents welcome to our Gems class page.

Autumn Term 2014

2nd Half Term

Weeks 6 & 7 - What a busy end to a super term of learning!  The children were amazing in their Christmas Performances and we hope you enjoyed the whole event.  We had lots and lots of fun on our Reward day including a Magician and a Christmas party with lots of lovely food kindly provided by our parents and of course dancing and games.  We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Spring Term opens on Wednesday 7th January 2015.

Week 5 - The children have been working hard this week practicing and preparing for our Christmas Performances next week. (Tuesday 9th December at 2pm and Wednesday 10th December at 10.30am).  We have been listening to the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman' story and decided to turn our home corner area into a post office.  The children have started to make their Christmas surprises for parents which included lots of fun and tickly painting!!!  We have also started to learn about the Nativity story and using puppets to act it out and sequence the events.

Week 4 - We have been so busy this week making lots and lots of decorations for Christmas.  Our school is going to look so amazing for Christmas on Monday!  We have continued to have snacks from around the world - wraps from Mexico, prawn crackers from China and croissants from France.  We have learnt the phoneme Oo this week.  Next week sees the start of a new theme - 'The Jolly Postman's Christmas'.

Week 3 - This weeks busy learning; recognising and ordering numbers, writing our names especially the first letter. The children loved the Spanish tortilla for snack. A huge thank you to Mr Sveinsson and Isabelle for coming in and reading the children a story in Icelandic and for teaching us all how to say hello, goodbye and thank you.

Week 2 - This week we have started our mini theme 'Around the World'.  We have learnt about a story called 'My Granny went to market.'  Granny travels around the world buying different things on her magic flying carpet.  The children had to help Granny as she lost her flying carpet so they made her a new one outside and decorated it with lines, circles and zigzag.  The children helped to set up an International Airport in our home corner area; they have been jetting off to lots of exotic places.... We have had lots of different foods from Italy this week for our snack.  If you are able to come in and share your experiences of different countries and cultures please speak to Mrs Hawking.
The children joined in with Children In Need by wearing odd socks or slippers!  Thank you for all of your donations to Children In Need and to the Operation Christmas Child Project.

Week 1 - Welcome back!  We have had a busy week learning about Bonfire Night.  We have made our own rockets using tubes and straws, used different methods to paint fireworks and used crayons to make wax resist pictures.  Our Sound of the week was Ff.  We have started to make a wonderful display of all of the Parents We are Proud of certificates - well done children for super achievements at home.  The children have also started to bring in their half term mini project to make a 'My Special Box'.  The children have loved talking about and sharing their special boxes with us.   On Thursday we were very lucky to have a visit from Pudsey Bear!

1st Half Term
Weeks 1 and 2 - The children have all settled well into our new Nursery Unit.  They are beginning to learn the rules and routines.  We are have been learning about the story 'Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs go to school'.

Weeks 3 and 4 - The children have been learning about Autumn.  We found lots of leaves, blackberries and acorns on our Autumn Walk around school.  We used these leaves to make rubbings, prints and collages.  Thank you for all of the wonderful Autumn items the children have brought in.  We have learnt the phonemes Pp and Ss.  Our story of the fortnight has been Percy the Park Keeper After the Storm.  We have acted the story out and built new homes for the animals using the large bricks and work tools.  Our Mathematical  focus has been shape; naming, sorting, matching and talking the properties of the 4 basic shapes.

Week 5 - We have started learning about the story Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.  We have been learning to retell the story with actions.  The children have had great fun making and exploring porridge this week.  Our mathematical focus has been on size; using the language of size along with sorting and ordering the 3 Bears items.  We have been busy learning our Harvest Festival song ready for next weeks assembly.

Week 6 - We have continued to learn to story tell with actions the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears along with acting to the story out with the bears and dolls house.  The children took part in their first whole school assembly this week by performing our Harvest Festival song 'Its Harvest Time'.  The children did an amazing job and we were incredibly proud of them not just in how well they sang but also because of how well they sat and listened to other classes as they performed their songs etc.  We would like to say a huge thank you for all of your kind food donations for the St Neots Food Bank.  We had great fun this week exploring 'gloop' (corn flour and conditioner mixed together)  it smelt lovely and was very clever gloop as it was runny, smooth but also crumbly and mouldable!  We have begun to learn about the Diwali the Hindu Festival of Light.

Week - 7 We carried on learning about Diwali by making salt dough divas and decorating them, baking a chickpea dahl curry loaf and tasting curry sauce and rice for snack.  We learnt about the Helen Cooper story Pumpkin Soup and on Friday we had great fun making pumpkin soup for snack -its was yummy and the children found using Mrs Hawking's soup maker to cook it in fascinating.

Thank you Mrs Hawking
