The children have finished their non – fiction texts all about bugs. For the next few weeks the children will be looking at poetry. They are going to be identifying different features, rehearsing poems and creating their own.
Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning about fractions. They will be using different resources to find fractions and learning how to identify a fraction of a shape before moving onto numbers. They have been continuing to learn and develop their rainbow recall fluency skills and earning their certificates and badges.
In Science, the children have been learning about living things and their habitats. This week, they have created their very own minibeast hotels which they have hidden around the school. Over the next couple of weeks, we will monitor them and see which bugs are attracted to them before recording the data using our statistics knowledge that we have learnt in maths.
Year 1 and 2 have been looking at the Viking invasion and significant battles during this era. They have also been looking at Sikhism and the different Gurus and their different teachings within the Sikh belief. Through their outside learning, the children have been bird watching, bug hunting and looking at ways to improve our environment.
Welcome back, I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas. Please find below a summary of Year 1 and 2’s main learning areas for this term along with some general reminders.
This half term, Year 1 and 2 will be focusing their learning around the story ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. First, we will be using our reading skills to infer. We will look at the images in the story to make predictions, describe and infer characters based on their actions. We will then be writing descriptive pieces whilst focussing on powerful vocabulary and sentence structure.
In Year 1, we will start by focusing on doubles and halves. We will also be looking at shape this half term. We will be comparing and identifying shapes in different places.
In Year 2, we have recapped and consolidated the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The children will then learn about area and measure the area of different 2D shapes.
Spellings will be handed out on a Wednesday to be returned the following Monday. We expect the children to learn their spellings as they will have spelling quizzes in the week. They will also be expected to use the spellings in their writing.
For Maths homework, the children will be using Numbots and are expected to complete 30 minutes each week. The children are expected to read each week and complete ‘5 Reads and a Book Talk’. We would very much appreciate you listening to your child read and discussing their book with them. The children (or parent) should write a comment in their book and we request that you sign your child’s reading record book too. This will really help them to progress in reading and writing. We will be checking your child’s reading diary regularly throughout the week.
Year 3 and 4 will have PE sessions every Wednesday morning with Mr Franco (both indoors and outdoors). However, other sessions may arise throughout the week so please ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times, and are prepared for the unpredictable winter weather. PE kit is a plain white t-shirt or polo shirt, black shorts, black joggers and an outdoor jumper (when the weather requires it), outdoor trainers (these must be different shoes to the ones your child wears to school) and a water bottle.
To begin with, Year 1 and 2 are going to be learning all about plant. The children will be learning about the different parts of plants and their functions. The children will be completing many experiments and interesting activities to further develop their understanding and allow them to ask scientific questions.
