Spring 2022

March 2022

English

In English, the children have enjoyed learning Norse myths. We spent some time researching the Norse gods so that we could familiarise ourselves with the characters. The children have been so engaged when listening to the myths and have written a recount of Odin’s eye.

Mathematics

In Maths, the children are learning about fractions. We have focused our learning on halves, quarters and thirds, before moving on to finding equivalent fractions. We have worked practically to find a fraction of a shape and fractions of an amount. The children enjoyed a problem-solving activity involving fair sharing.

Science

In Science, the children have been learning about soil. The children know the four components that soil is made from as well as being able to describe the processes of soil formation. This week, we carried out an investigation to find out “What happens when we add acid to different types of rocks?” The children loved this and developed their scientific thinking of how to conduct a fair test.

 Topic

Year 3 are continuously enjoying their topic of ‘The Vikings’. The children have been learning about the Viking raid on Lindisfarne and how King Canute ruled England. We have explored Viking Britain from 793AD until 1066 AD. In Art, the children are working on developing their shading techniques.

February 2022

English

In English we have just finished our class text Arthur and the golden rope. The children really enjoyed planning and writing their own adventure stories using Arthur as their main character. The children are very excited to be moving onto Norse myths.

 Mathematics

This half term we are focusing on length and perimeter. The children have explored different units of measure and are able to convert mm, cm and m. The children applied their already learned addition and subtraction skills to add and subtract lengths. The children moved their learning of measuring length to work out the perimeter of a 2D shape. The children have enjoyed calculating the perimeter of shapes and are now able to find the perimeter of a rectilinear shape with missing parts, showing great problem-solving skills.

Science

In Science, the children have been learning about fossils. The children are able to explain what fossils are and can describe the fossilisation process. The children have been researching significant people in science with a particular focus on Mary Anning’s contribution to fossils and palaeontology.

Topic

Year 3 are continuously enjoying their topic of ‘The Vikings’. The children have been able to explore many artifacts and love learning fun facts. The children have enjoyed learning about why the Viking’s invaded Britain as well as learning about Viking society and conflict. The children have really enjoyed our DT lessons where they are designing and creating their own cushion. The children are working on developing their sewing skills
