Welcome to Year 5 – Armstrong Class! 

What a fantastic start to Year 5 we have had! The children have settled into Armstrong Class brilliantly and have already shown how enthusiastic, curious and hardworking they can be. We have been busy learning, exploring and challenging ourselves across the curriculum.

We have started our new English text, Pugs of the Frozen North, and the children have loved getting into role as Shen. They have written some incredible diary entries, using a range of sentence structures and clauses, including subordinate and relative clauses. We have also been focusing on show, don't tell to describe Shen's emotions and bring our writing to life. We have been incredibly impressed with the vocabulary, creativity and detail the children have included in their work!

In maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and working with numbers up to one million. The children have been partitioning, comparing and ordering numbers, as well as rounding to different powers of 10. They have worked hard to explain their mathematical thinking and have enjoyed challenging themselves with increasingly tricky problems.

Our new science topic is Materials. We have been learning about mixtures and investigating how different materials can be separated. The children became gold prospectors for the day and had to separate a mixture to find the hidden gold! They used the process of sieving and were able to explain why this method worked.

We have also begun our exciting Vikings topic. The children have been historians, using a range of sources to investigate and make inferences about Viking life. We have explored Viking trading routes and considered why these routes were so important to the Vikings.

Alongside our core subjects, we have already been busy learning in Art, Music, PSHE and many other areas of the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see the children developing their confidence, working together and embracing new challenges.

We are incredibly proud of the fantastic start Armstrong Class have made to Year 5 and are excited to see where our learning takes us next!
