Autumn Term 2023

Information for parents and families

Week Ending 15th December 
The children have had a really fantastic week with their learning. In English, the children have been learning the poem ‘A ride with Santa’ by Ovie Pedige Tanner. The children then worked with a partner to create PowerPoint slides for the poem. We have been really impressed with how amazing their PowerPoint presentations are. In Maths, they have continued their learning with multiplication and division. We have been really impressed with how they are applying their number knowledge. In Art, the children enjoyed working collaboratively to create a whole class power print using all of the skills that they have learnt this half term.

Week Ending 8th December
The children have had a fabulous week of learning. In our English lessons, the children have enjoyed planning and writing an argument to express their opinion on whether Mr Hoppy should have lied to Mrs Silver. The children finished of this unit of work by editing their argument and making improvements. In Maths, the children have continued their learning of multiplication and division. They have been focusing on problem solving and reasoning questions. To finish of our science unit on electricity, the children created safety posters to consolidate everything that we have learned in this unit. The children really enjoyed making their wax resisted pictures. They took great care to scrape their artwork neatly and the final effect was really impressive.

Week Ending 1st December

In Maths, the children have started their unit on multiplication and division. We have recapped the strategies that we learnt last term as well as focusing on times table recall. In our English lessons, we have been learning how to start sentences with subordinating clauses and how to use apostrophes for contractions. The children have thoroughly enjoyed our art unit. They created a composition using collage techniques and are looking forward to producing their wax resist pictures.  

Week Ending 24th November
We have been incredibly impressed with the children's efforts in their assessments this week. They have all worked extremely hard and should be so proud of themselves.
The children got very excited during Science this week. They carried out an investigation to see which materials were electrical conductors and which were insulators. Finally, they really enjoyed learning about the positive and negative effects of living near a volcano.

Week Ending 17th November
The children have had a fabulous week of learning. In our English lessons, the children have enjoyed planning and writing their own ending to the story Esio trot. The children finished of this unit of work by editing their story and making improvements. The children took great pleasure in reading aloud and sharing their story with other children in Year 3/4.  In Maths, the children have completed their learning of addition and subtraction and have moved on to learning about the area of shapes. The children are loving our science unit on electricity. They have enjoyed creating a switch and connecting it to a circuit to switch a light on and off. The children have enjoyed our Art topic and have produced stunning pieces of artwork using charcoal, with a focus on drawing with proportion.

Week Ending 10th November

The children have had a fantastic week at school. They have got stuck into their learning and we are really proud of everything that they have shown us. In our English lessons, we have been recounting the story of Esio trot by Roald Dahl. They used their amazing roleplaying skills to rein act the story so far. They have thoroughly enjoyed listening to and acting out the story in groups. In Maths, the children have been continuing their learning of addition and subtraction. They have been learning to use the column method with exchange. They have also really enjoyed the beginning of our Geography topic about volcanoes. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm towards all of the subjects that we have been teaching, including Art, French, Music and PSHE. We are looking forward to seeing where their learning takes us next week!

 

 

Week Ending 3rd November
In Maths, the children have been continuing their learning of addition and subtraction. The children have been able to make exchanges using the column method. In our English lessons, they have been learning how to start their sentences with different types of clauses. Next week, they will use these skills within their writing. The children were very excited to start our Geography topic on volcanoes and loved learning about the four layers that make up the Earth. The children were fascinated in Science when creating an electrical circuit to make a light bulb work. Finally, the children have enjoyed learning French and are staring to remember key words and phrases.

Week Ending 20th October

The children have had a fabulous week of learning. In our English lessons, the children have enjoyed planning and writing their own story which included the characters from our class text The Stone Age Boy. The children finished of this unit of work by editing their story and making improvements. In Maths, the children have continued their learning of addition and subtraction and have started to use the column method to work out their calculations. To finish of our science unit on the digestive system, the children loved exploring poo! They were able to identify whether an animal was a carnivore, herbivore or an omnivore by examining the images of poo! The children have worked really hard this half term. Have an amazing half term and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 31st October as Monday 30th October is a teacher training day.

Week Ending 13th October

The children have had a really fantastic week with their learning. We have been really impressed with how they have been continuing with their sewing to make their book sleeve or envelope. They have shown so much resilience and determination developing this skill and we are so proud of them. In our English lessons, we have been recounting the story of Stone Age Boy. They used amazing vocabulary and lots of different sentence types to make their writing fantastic. In Maths, they have continued their learning about addition and subtraction. We have been really impressed with how they are applying their number knowledge. They really enjoyed comparing Neolithic and Iron Age settlements using a variety of historical sources.

Week Ending 6th October

In Maths, Year 4 have finished their learning about place value by developing their understanding of how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We have been so proud of how they approached this topic and they are looking forward to using the skills they have learnt in addition and subtraction over the coming weeks. In Year 3, the children have begun their learning about addition and subtraction by applying number bonds and creating fact families. In our English lessons, they have been learning how to start their sentences with adjectives, write sentences of different lengths and how to use speech punctuation. Next week, they will use these skills within their writing. The children were very excited to design their own bots in computing which would help us in the classroom. We got some fantastic designs that we really wish we actually had! The children were fascinated in Science identifying animal skulls and looking at their teeth to determine if they were a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Finally, they loved creating their own Rangoli patterns in RE. We got some amazing designs!

Week Ending 29th September

We have been incredibly impressed with the children's writing this week. They have used facts from their research to write their own information report about life in the Stone Age. Using subheadings and paragraphs, they were able to organise their writing really well. In Maths, they have compared and ordered numbers. In Year 4, the children have also been learning about Roman numerals. Across Years 3 and 4, the children have also been practising their times tables. In PSHE, we have looked at the skills and strengths that we have and how these can help us and others. The children got very excited during Science this week. They carried out an investigation for how effective different toothbrushes were at cleaning. Finally, they really enjoyed learning about how food was sourced during the Stone Age and Bronze Age.

Week Ending 22nd September

In our English lessons, we have been using the story 'Stone Age Boy' as inspiration for our writing. The children have written character and setting descriptions as well as completed research about life in the Stone Age in preparation for writing their own report next week. We have been really impressed with their use of paragraphing in their writing and we are looking forward to reading their finished reports. In Maths, we have continued our learning about the place value of numbers. They have really impressed us with their confidence and ability in this area of Maths. In Science, they loved learning about the different types of teeth and their roles. They got really excited trying to identify the types of teeth in their own mouths. Across the other subjects, the children have designed their own book sleeves, continued learning about life from the Stone Age to Iron Age and developed a deeper understanding of how to use the Internet safely.

Week Ending 15th September

The children have had a fantastic first two weeks back at school. They have got stuck into their learning and we are already so proud of everything that they have shown us. In English, they have been learning how to use conjunctions, write topic sentences and organise paragraphs. We are using the story Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura as inspiration for our writing. They have thoroughly enjoyed listening to and acting out the story. In Maths, the children are learning about place value. They are using equipment and drawings to represent a variety of numbers. They have also really enjoyed the beginning of our History topic about life in the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm towards all of the subjects that we have been teaching, including RE, DT, Computing and PSHE. We are looking forward to seeing where their learning takes us next week!
