Autumn Term
Week ending 24th October
What an amazing first half term the children have had in Year 1. They have settled into Year 1 brilliantly and have worked so incredibly hard. Last week, the children learnt about the celebration of Diwali. They found out why it is celebrated, who celebrates and what they do. This week, the children have created some wonderful story maps of 'Funnybones' and then used story maps to create their own adventures for the three skeletons. In maths, the children have begun to learn about parts and wholes in preparation for addition and subtraction. They have also investigated stability in DT and used their findings to make some superb stable pencil pots. Outside, the children have loved exploring the autumnal changes and have used outside resources to make bats and pumpkins in shades of autumn.
Week ending 10th October
The children have had an incredibly busy couple of weeks and have really settled into the hard-working routines of Year 1. In English, the books we read were 'Stanley's Stick' with a focus on using key skills in their writing of capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and 'Simon Sock' with a focus on adjectives. In Maths, the children have continued to secure their place value knowledge of numbers up to 100. They have counted forwards and backwards, made groups of 10 and solved problems with blank number lines. The children have also been outside learning a lot, really taking notice of the changes in the season as we move through Autumn and have made some superb observations.
Week ending 26th September
Over the last two weeks, the children have continued their enthusiasm for learning. In English, Drawing Club has continued with the fairytale classic of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' and a step into the past of 'Wacky Races' with lots of fun. The children's imaginations were fantastic as they created their own vehicles to race. They have loved their outside learning time, enjoying exploring the maze and story-sharing area the most. They have re-told 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' with great enthusiasm outside before adapting it to create their own version, really focussing on adjectives to bring their story to life.
Week ending 12th September
The children have had a very busy first two weeks in Year 1. They have learnt their new routines and expectations brilliantly and have really impressed with their superb behaviour. They have explored the continuous provision and have used this responsibly while not taking part in focused group work. They have begun their English, maths, history, Science and PSHE learning for the term, as well as continuing with their phonics.
