Week ending 20th March 2026

It has been another busy few weeks with lots of fantastic learning taking place across the curriculum.

In English, the children have been focusing on writing balanced arguments inspired by Kensuke’s Kingdom. They have explored the key question of whether Kensuke is caring for Michael or keeping him prisoner. The class has shown great thoughtfulness in considering both sides of the argument, using evidence from the text to support their ideas. It has been wonderful to see the children developing their reasoning skills and presenting their viewpoints clearly and confidently in a debate-style setting.

In Maths, we have successfully completed our unit on perimeter and length. The children worked hard to measure and calculate accurately, building a strong understanding of these key concepts. We have now moved on to fractions, where the focus has been on understanding the whole, counting beyond one and exploring mixed numbers. Along the way, the children have been introduced to new mathematical vocabulary, including the term vinculum which refers to the bar used to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction.

In Geography, the children brought in different food packages from home and investigated where the items were produced, grown and made. This helped them to understand the important concepts of importing and exporting food and how products travel across the world before reaching our homes.

In Music, we have been linking our learning to rivers, using their features to explore key elements such as rhythm, pitch and dynamics in creative and engaging ways.

Alongside all of this, the children have truly impressed us with their positive attitudes and focus during their recent assessments in Maths, Reading, and SPaG. They approached these questions with confidence and resilience, and should be very proud of their efforts.

Well done to all of Year 4 for continuing to work so hard and make sure you have lots of fun over the much needed Easter break!

Week ending 6th March 2026

It has been an exciting and enriching time for Year 4, filled with memorable experiences both in and out of the classroom!

A group of children had the fantastic opportunity to visit Grafham Water and what an amazing experience it was. The children embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, showing great resilience, determination and teamwork. They truly pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones and excelled in all activities. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackled new and exciting experiences.

Back at school, the rest of the class enjoyed a busy and engaging week. They explored the important topic of Fairtrade, learning about how their choices can make a difference in the world. Alongside this, the children worked hard on writing their own stories, preparing for the much-anticipated World Book Day.

World Book Day, celebrated on 5th March, was a joyful occasion for everyone. Some of the children came to school dressed as characters from their favourite books, bringing stories to life in a colourful and creative way. Throughout the day, they took part in fun book quizzes and enjoyed listening to stories read by adults across the school. It was a wonderful celebration of reading and imagination.

Well done to all of Year 4 for their enthusiasm, creativity and positive attitudes throughout such a busy and rewarding few weeks!

Week ending 13th February 2026

A Busy and Brilliant Few Weeks!

It has been an incredibly busy few weeks, filled with exciting learning experiences across the curriculum. One of the highlights was History Off the Page which was a huge success. The children absolutely loved stepping into role as Ancient Egyptians, fully immersing themselves in the experience. They had the opportunity to make their own perfume pots, design and create hieroglyphic tiles and even take part in an Egyptian banquet. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement made the day truly memorable.

In English, the children have been writing superb descriptive pieces inspired by a wild and calm sea landscapes. They have learnt how to use a new sentence structure called “the more, the more” and have experimented with a wide range of sentence starters to make their writing more engaging and varied. The progress they have made in building atmosphere and detail in their writing has been wonderful to see.

In Maths, the children have been working hard on division using both informal and formal methods. This week, they were introduced to the formal written method of division (the bus stop method) and have impressed me with how well they have retained key vocabulary such as divisor, dividend and quotient.

In Science, learning has focused on volume this week and the children have started to understand when sounds can become dangerous to our ears. The children have learnt that sounds are measured in decibels and explored a range of different sounds and how loud they can be.  

This week, we finished our Art unit on tint and shade where the children have truly blown me away with creativity. Their thoughtful use of colour and the variety of paint techniques they used gave their still-life compositions a stylish and unique finish.

What a fantastic few weeks it has been! Well done to everyone for their hard work and enthusiasm - enjoy half term! 🌟

Week ending 16th January 2026

Welcome back!

Year 4 have had a busy and exciting start to the term, and have shown fantastic resilience and maturity after having to move classrooms unexpectedly. The children have adapted quickly to their new learning space, remaining calm, sensible and positive throughout the change. We are extremely proud of their great attitude and positive outlook.

In English, we have started our new class text, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The children have been captivated by the opening chapters and have written some excellent predictions about what the story might be about, using clues from the text and oral discussions to support their ideas. More recently, they have debated whether Michael, the lead character, should sail around the world with his family.

In Science, we have begun our new topic on sound and vibrations. The children have explored what sound is, how vibrations travel and why we are able to hear sounds. There has been lots of thoughtful discussion and curiosity as the children shared their ideas and asked questions.

Our History lessons have taken us to Ancient Egypt. We located Egypt on a map and learnt about the importance of the River Nile, discussing why it was vital to everyday life in ancient times for trade and farming.

In Maths, we are learning about factors and products, and have been developing our understanding through practical activities and problem-solving. The children have shown great focus and determination when tackling more challenging questions whilst looking at the acronym RUCSAC to help with solving worded problems. I wonder if they can remember what the letters stand for?

Finally, in Art, we have been exploring tint and shade, experimenting with different colour paints, including white and black, to create different effects and deepen our understanding of tone through the use of three-dimensional images.

Well done, Year 4, for such a positive and hardworking start. We are really looking forward to the weeks ahead!
