Summer Term

Week ending 23rd May

As we finish the half term, the children have absolutely excelled with planning their own Greek Myth in English. They have designed their own main characters, villains and settings and planned speech between the characters. They have written incredible myths! In Maths, we finished position and direction by learning about translation and lines of symmetry. We then moved onto decimals and used known facts to add and subtract decimals. We finished our Science topic by investigating friction and creating our own levers and pulleys. This was lots of fun- especially catapulting marshmallows across the room!

4 children from Year 5 competed in the local Maths Challenge. They were excellent! Well done Megan, Emily, Teddy and Charlie!

Week ending 8th May

In English, the children have enjoyed reading the myth 'Theseus and the Minotaur'. They have written fantastic non-chronological reports of the Minotaur and followed this by writing instructions on how to kill the Minotaur. In Maths, the children have started the unit position and direction. They have learnt how to read and plot co-ordinates and solved problems involving co-ordinates. In Science, the children enjoyed investigating water resistance. They created a range of shapes and dropped them into water to see which would fall quickest. They learnt that streamlined shapes had less resistance than shapes with larger surface areas. The children finished creating their installation art where they filled empty spaces to creating meaning. I am looking forward to seeing how they creating sculpture using the scarp shed soon!

Year 5 also thoroughly enjoyed their DLPT sporting event. They competed in dodgeball, athletics and football. We came second! Well done Year 5!

Week ending 24th April

We are thrilled to welcome the children back for the summer term! The children have returned to school with a superb attitude to their learning and have demonstrated excellent resilience as they embark on their final term of Year 5 learning.

In Science, we have begun our topic of forces. The children have measured gravity using Newton metres and have investigated the force air resistance by creating different sized parachutes and timing how quickly they fell. In English, we have started reading 'Greek Myths'. We have begun our topic by reading Perseus. The children wrote fantastic descriptions of Medusa and all retold the myth using fantastic vocabulary. We read a second myth of Icarus and Daedalus and the children wrote brilliant persuasive letters to persuade Daedalus to stay or leave the castle. In Maths, we have started our unit of Shape. The children have learnt how to measure angles using a protractor and calculated angles and lengths in shapes. The children have enjoyed starting the unit of Ancient Greece (which has linked nicely with our English).
