Summer Term

Week ending 23rd May

As we finish the half term, the children have absolutely excelled with their reading in preparation for their phonics screen. They have been working hard to use their phonics in their reading and their confidence is really shining through. In English, the children have explored rhyme and rhythm in poetry to perform the classic poem 'I Had a Little Nut Tree', before using their knowledge of rhyming words to create their own version. In Maths, the children have learnt about position and direction. The Science topic around plants has come to an end, with the children demonstrating their knowledge by investigating seeds and bulbs. The seeds and beans they planted are growing well! The children have also finished their History topic about explorers by creating their own coat of arms to demonstrate what the explorers we learnt about will be remembered for. They showcased their learning with great clarity and included excellent details. The children have also created some wonderful moving toys in DT, demonstrating great perseverance to ensure their wheels turned smoothly and their axles held them in place well.

Week ending 8th May

The children have been absolutely loving outside learning over the last two weeks. They have all planted sunflowers and have been thrilled as the radishes, broad beans, peppers and carrots have started to grow shoots in the poly tunnel. The care they are taking of their plants is fabulous! In English, the children have been learning to read and write sentences with exclamation marks and have put some wonderful effort into their voices to show the need for an exclamation mark. In Maths, the children have begun to learn about fractions by exploring a half and are very clear that this must be two equal parts. The children have also used computers to create pictograms to show data. They were incredibly resilient with this and worked well in pairs to overcome any problems they experienced.

Week ending 24th April

We are thrilled to welcome the children back for the summer term! The children have returned to school with a superb attitude to their learning and have demonstrated excellent resilience as they embark on their final term of Year 1 learning. We have begun our topic of plants in Science and have carried on this learning with planting and weeding in our outside learning. In English, the children have enjoyed 'The Extraordinary Gardener' to support writing instructions and the classic fairytale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. In maths, the children have begun learning about multiplication and division by grouping and sharing, as well as making arrays and practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. They are getting rather speedy at this! We have also begun our topic about explorers in History and begun learning about wheels and axles in DT.
