Spring Term

Information for parents and families

Knowledge Organisers to support learning at home

Week Ending 17th January 2025

In English this week, the children have read the first two chapters of our new text, Skellig. In one scene, the main character has just moved house and finds some unusual objects outside a derelict shed at the bottom of the garden. Using one of the objects found, the children wrote detailed sentences about the object to describe it. They then wrote excellent setting descriptions using personification to describe where the object was and what it once might have been used for.

In Maths this week, the children have been working hard on their arithmetic skills and spend one lesson each week revising and completing assessments based on the four operations. In addition to this, booster style sessions are taking place to prepare the children for their maths SATs arithmetic paper. Later in the week, the children have been focussing on the last few objectives of our fractions unit where they have been revising their knowledge of fractions of an amount.

In Music, the children have been busy practising our songs for the Young Voices concert taking place at the O2 in a few weeks. I have been really impressed with their voices as their confidence has been increasing when singing aloud.

As the week finished, the children have been looking at the active and passive voice which is specifically a Year 6 objective. Next week, the children will be writing a newspaper report which features the passive voice. Therefore, to prepare, the children have been looking at what the passive voice is and seeing if they could spot this technique in newspaper examples.

Week Ending 10th January 2025

Happy New Year and welcome back to school. It has been a lovely but busy start to the Spring Term. In English this week, the children have been introduced to their new text which is called Skellig by the author David Almond. During their first lesson, the children looked at literal and inferential meaning and unpicked some of the ideas the author has used in Chapter 1.

In Maths this week, the children have been working hard on their arithmetic skills and retrieving the information from last term. Over the next few weeks, the children will be working on embedding their knowledge of arithmetic style questions in the form of: fractions, decimals, long division, long multiplication, BIDMAS, percentages, as well as using place value to round, divide and multiply by 10, 100 and 1000. Revising these regularly and working on techniques to prepare for SATs will be the focus for this first half term.

In History, the children have started their new topic which looks at World War 2 and the impact it had on the people of Britain. The children had an introduction to this on Wednesday looking in detail at the causes of World War 2 as well as what life was like for evacuees. These two lessons prepared the children well for their History off the Page day which took place on Thursday. Throughout the day, Year 6 had a fantastic time fully immersing themselves in what school life would have been like in the 1940’s. The children were able to use a quill and ink, make their own ID cards and ration books, as well as use money to purchase items from the village shops in a role play scenario that was set up for the afternoon session.
