Summer Term
Week ending 6th June
The children had a super week to start the last half term of the year.
They began a new book in English called 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley', which is based around the environmental effects of littering. The children story-mapped and then wrote a recount of the story with fantastic detail.
In Maths, the Year 1's have begun their unit of fractions by finding a half of shapes and quantities. The Year 2's have begun their unit on time by recalling o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.
The children finished their history unit this week. They explored how castles had improved over time by looking at important defence features, before designing their own strong and imaginative castles.
Week ending 23rd May
As we come to the end of a short but very busy half term, the children have created their own poems. The Year 1's were inspired by nature to create their own version of 'I had a Little Nut Tree', building on their knowledge of adjectives. The Year 2's went a little more grotesque with their own little monsters. In Maths, the Year 1's have been practising position and direction. They have explored turns, left, right, above, below and ordinal numbers with increasing confidence to even begin directing their friends around. The children have been botanists in Science and have discovered a new plant! They learnt about different types of Norman castles in History, including a motte and bailey and a stone keep castle. They were superb at noticing similarities and differences between these too.
Week ending 16th May
The children have been superstars this week whilst the Year 6’s have had their SATs.
In English, the Year 1’s have read the story ‘The Knight and the Dragon’. The book gradually has fewer words, so they have made up their own wonderful sentences as authors to tell the story. The Year 2’s have focused on their reading skills and have been practising finding information in texts to answer questions.
In Maths, the Year 1’s have been grouping and sharing and have even been using the division symbol to show their answers. The Year 2’s have continued with fractions and have even had time to practise all four operations too!
The children conducted a woodlice experiment in Science with great responsibility and recorded their answers before creating a conclusion.
In History, the children have learnt about the Bayeux Tapestry and the story of William the Conqueror.
In RE, the children have learnt about visiting a Mosque.
Week ending 9th May
This week, we have continued our castles and monarchs topic in History as the children role played the coronation of a monarch with great enthusiasm.
In English, the Year 1’s have written about the king's pants with superb adjectives and the Year 2’s have written a report about castles with an abundance of clear information.
In Maths, the Year 1’s have made a lot of arrays and the Year 2’s have continued with their fractions unit.
On Thursday, we spent time learning about and celebrating VE Day.
Finally, we explored our creativity in music and danced to planet-themed music by Gustav Holst.
Week ending 2nd May
We started this week with a visit from History off the Page to learn about life in a mediaeval castle. In the morning, the children learnt about jobs in the castle - from making candles and cooking food to defending the castle walls. In the afternoon, the children celebrated with a banquet where they were served food before watching traditional entertainment, such as jousting, dancing, singing and court jesters. After their very exciting and informative castle day, they have shared so much of what they have learnt through their conversations and their writing.
In Maths, the year 1’s have counted been learning about groups and using their knowledge to count quantities in equal groups of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The Year 2’s have been learning about fractions of shapes.
The children were scientists this week, asking questions about worms and researching them to find the answers. When some answers still had to be investigated, the children have been worm hunting and created a wormery to observe the worms movements closely.
In History, the children have learnt about monarchs and in music they have begun to use their voices to create a soundscape.
Week ending 25th April
It has been wonderful welcoming the children back for the Summer term. They have returned to school brilliantly with lots of energy and enthusiasm for the new term.
We have begun our new topics this week, with a focus on our History topic of castles and monarchs. The children have learnt about castles, their features and the job roles people had who lived in a castle. They are looking forward to our History off the Page day on Monday.
They have also started their new topic in Science of microhabitats. The children were fantastic at identifying minibeasts and classifying them using a key.
