Spring Term
Week beginning 3rd February
In English, the children have started thinking about their own narratives. Next week, they will write their own adventure stories! This week, the children have created their own hero/ heroine, created a villain, written some dialogue between the 2 characters and have created a setting.
In Maths, the children have learnt how to divide 3 and 4 digit numbers by 1 digit using the bus stop method. They were introduced to the method by using counters and gradually increased to pictorial representations and then onto concrete methods. The children were able to exchange when needed and could identify remainders. They finished the week by answering a mixture of multiplication and division word problems where they had to identify which method was needed.
In History, the children finished the topic by looking at different propaganda used in the war. They looked at a variety of posters and were able to identify what message the government was trying to get across. They were also able to identify why propaganda was used in the war and why it was vital.
They finished the topic by creating incredible powerpoint presentations about everything they had learnt! They were fabulous!
Week beginning 27th January
In English, the children wrote incredible (yet disgusting) yeti noodle recipes. They included the grammar they learnt last week- parenthesis, imperative verbs and adverbials.
In Maths, the children started their multiplication and division unit. They learnt how to multiply 3 digit by 1 digit numbers, 2 digit by 2 digit and 3 digit by 2 digit numbers. They learnt how to do this by using the grid method and the column method.
In Science, the children investigated water resistance. In groups, they had to create 3 different shapes of playdough and drop them into water to time how long they took to sink. They found that the shapes which were more streamlined sank quicker as they had a smaller surface area which created less water resista
In History, the children learnt about women in WW2. They created posters about the roles of women in WW2 and how their lives had changed. They had to complete research to find information about their jobs, any women who had remarkable contributions, their pay and the land army.
Week beginning 20th January
This week in English, the children read a chapter of the book all about yeti's who made delicious noodles for the characters. The children will write their own recipe for yeti noodles next week but before that they have learnt about imperative verbs, adverbials and parenthesis. The children wrote some fantastic sentences containing these pieces of grammar which they will use in their instructions next week.
In Maths, the children finished their fraction topic by learning how to subtract fractions. They subtracted fractions under a whole, greater than one whole, mixed number fractions and improper fractions. They also had to use their knowledge of converting improper to mixed and back again to support their calculations.
In Science, the children investigated air resistance. They had to think about how a parachute works and test 3 different sizes. We found that the larger parachute fell slowest as it had the biggest surface area.
In topic, the children loved learning about different war planes! Our main focus was the Spitfire and the Heinkel HE. The children researched both planes and then wrote fantastic comparisons identifying the similarities and differences between the 2 planes.
Week beginning 13th January
This week, the children have written incredible spine poems about the kraken. The kraken is an obstacle the characters in our book 'Pugs of the Frozen North' have to overcome. The children thought really hard about the adjectives, adverbs, verbs and poetic devices they used. The also read a poem about the kraken written by Tenneson and we wrote a collaborative poem using a similar structure.
In Maths, the children have learnt how to add fractions. They have added fractions less than a whole, improper fractions and mixed number fractions. The also had to multiply the numerators and denominators to find the common denominator! Tricky stuff!
In Science, we have started our new topic of forces. We started the unit by learning about gravity. The children completed an experiment where they measured the mass of objects (in grams) and then measured the newtons (the gravitational pull). The discovered that there was a link between mass and weight- 100g= 1 newton!
In History, the children are really enjoying learning about WW2. We have started learning about the battle of Britain. The children created a venn diagram and sorted statements deciding whether it would benefit the RAF or the Luftwaffe. Next week, they will be researching and comparing british and german aircrafts.

Science- reversible changes
Week beginning 6th January
Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The children have come back to school amazingly! We have been very lucky to have our History Off The Page day this week and the children fully immersed themselves into the topic of WW2! They had the best time role playing an evacuee and attending a school in WW2. The teacher was very strict and a couple of children even had the cane! In the afternoon, they had their ration booklets and identity tags and they were tasked to complete their shopping list. They had 2 shillings to purchase everything they needed from the local shops. Most children also tried a new food- spam! They were surprised at how nice a spam sandwich tasted!
In addition to History off the Page, we also completed a Science day! We finished our topic of materials and their properties and completed different experiments focussing on hardness, transparency, conductivity and irreversible changes. The experiments were good fun and the children loved it!
Finally, the children enjoyed their first swimming lesson and their first dance and gymnastic lessons in PE. PE will remain on a Wednesday afternoon and swimming will be on Friday.
Please have a look at the pictures from our science and history day!
