English
Since the New Year, the children have enjoyed writing several narratives, including one based on the story 'Escape from Pompeii' and another based on the short fantasy film called 'Once in a Lifetime' in which an explorer's airship is pulled by a group of mysterious, flying turtles.
Having researched the landscape and weather of Antarctica, and learnt about the 1911/1912 Race to the Pole between Roald Amundsen and Captain R F Scott, the children are now basing their English work on the exciting story of Shackleton's Journey by William Grill. They have all taken on the character of one of the crew to add a real sense of reality to their writing in role.
Mathematics
Since the New Year, the learning focus in Year 6 has been on carrying out all four operations with decimals and with fractions, and on finding the equivalents between fractions, decimals and percentages.
Visits
Year Six have been incredibly lucky over the last few weeks! They have been to London twice, once to take part in the Young Voices concert at the O2 alongside more than 8,000 other children. It was definitely the experience of a lifetime. The following week, they went to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to watch a performance of the opera 'The Magic Flute' by Mozart. Although it was in German, the children absolutely loved the story, the music and the spectacle.
