Summer Term

Year 2 curriculum overview Summer Term

Week Ending 5th July

The children have been working really hard this week finishing their compositions and performing them in music. They have also been on a walk around the local area to identify human features and we have discussed how the local area is used.

On Thursday, we got the opportunity to vote for our new class names which led to lots of questions about elections and what the government does.

We have also started our DT project this week and have been busy designing our moving monsters ready to create a childrens toy next week.

Week Ending 28th June

The children have been learning how to write dialogue in our English lessons this week and are going to be using this to add to their letters next week. In maths, we have been learning all about morning and turning shapes and have focused a lot on the correct mathematical language. We have made plant pots out of different materials and tested which ones are the most suitable. They also had to consider which material was the most eco friendly. We have started our DT unit and have been practising making linkages for our moving monsters.

Week Ending 21st June

The children have had a great week learning all about position and direction. Today, they were able to explore this using the beebots.
They have now finished their non-chronological reports on space and are looking forward to their new class story next week.
In science, they tested the suitability of different materials ready to make a plant pot later in the term.
This afternoon, they have loved celebrating our Ofsted achievements with a celebration picnic and dance.

Week Ending 14th June

The children have completed their last set of assessments for Year 2 this week and they have blown me away with how hard they have worked. They have had a busy week with the trip to the library and the Year 2 sports event this morning so they should be very tired!

This morning, they got to have a go at golf, netball, football, running and throwing and were very respectful to the other schools that joined us.
They have also impressed me with how well they have remembered the countries in the UK, the oceans and seas surrounding the UK and now the famous coastlines.
In science they have been looking at how paper is made and could identify each stage in the production process.

Week Ending 7th June

This week the children have been learning about statistics in maths and have explored pictograms. We have begun to look at features of a non-chronological report and they are starting to research a planet of their choosing.

They were very excited that Mrs Brockborne had got hold of some space ice cream for them to try.

We have ended the week with some assessments and they should all be incredibly proud of what they have achieved so far!

Week Ending 17th May

The children have blown me away this week with their innovated chapter for The Twits. They have carefully thought of different sentence starters, adjectives, conjunctions and sentence types to make their story really interesting to read.

We have come to the end of our unit on time and the children have all been working hard to tell the time past and to the hour. Even when it has been tricky, they have kept going and are beginning to tell the time on the clock throughout the day.

They have enjoyed learning about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the Moon and learned all about the significant event that changed the future of space exploration. This tied in nicely with out computing where they looked in more detail at the sensors on the international space station.

Although it was raining, they still managed some outdoor learning in the classroom and made some leaf prints on fabric.

Week Ending 10th May

This week the children have really impressed me by telling the time to quarter past and quarter to mostly accurately. They are able to tell me which side of the clock is past and which is to and can split the clock in to quarters to support their understanding.

In English, the children have planned a new trick for Mr Twit to get Mrs Twit back and have begun the first paragraph of their story. I have loved reading them already and can’t wait to read the rest next week.

They have recorded the growth of our germination experiment and have proved what plants need to grow. They were surprised to see that the seed with no light had germinated.

As we have finished our clay tiles, we have moved onto our new computing unit on the ISS. The children have really enjoyed exploring the virtual space station and finding out more about how people survive in space.

Week Ending 3rd May

Ruby Class have been learning how to tell the time this week. They have got the hang of telling the time to the hour and half past and we are now working on quarter past and quarter to. In English, they have written wonderful descriptions about Mr Twit and the Twit’s house ready to incorporate them into their innovated chapters.

In History, we have been exploring Bessie Coleman and why she is significant. They really enjoyed the story of her life and learning about all of the aeroplane stunts she performed.

This afternoon, they have completed their house tiles. They have carefully made tiles and patterns using various tools and have followed their plans to create a wonderful piece of art.

Week Ending 26th March

What a busy week! The children are back in full swing and back to finding fractions of numbers and shapes. In English, they have written their diary entry as Mrs Twit and are beginning to think of a new trick to play on Mr Twit for their innovated chapter. They have produced some wonderful sentences this week focusing on using a range of different sentence starters.

In History, we have learned the different between famous and significant people. They have looked at significant events and people in history and how they have impacted peoples lives. In art, they have began to design their clay houses and have thought about how they are going to make the designs.

They have been looking at the inside of bulbs in science and identifying the differences between seeds and bulbs. On Thursdays, the children are lucky enough to have outdoor learning and have enjoyed exploring and planting outside of their science lesson.

Week Ending 19th April

This week, the children have continued with our topic on fractions and have been recognising and finding unit fractions.

In English, we have started our new book ‘The Twits’ and the children are thoroughly enjoying the gruesome pranks in the story. They are working towards writing a diary entry as Mr Twit.

We have began our new plant topic by planting our own seeds and we have set up an experiment for us to observe and record over the next few weeks. The children have each made predictions about what conditions are going to allow the seed to germinate.

We have learnt about the lives of the Wright brothers and how they were significant in the history of the aircraft.

Finally, they have enjoyed experimenting with clay this afternoon. They have been manipulating it and learning different techniques ready to create their models.
