Spring Term

Half Term Reading Challenge and Benefits of Reading Information

Week ending 15th March
It was such a busy week in 3/4 that we forgot to update Class Dojo! The children absolutely loved going outside for Forest School. They didn't let the rain dampen their spirits. We were so impressed with how they explored the area at the back of the field. We then continued this learning as part of science week where the theme was time. They planned what they wished the area would look like in the future and we were so impressed with their designs. Even though some were a little ambitious, we loved their imagination and ideas! In other learning, the children continued their learning about fractions in Maths. This is such a tricky topic and we have been so impressed with their understanding. On Friday, we loved seeing the children 'break the rules' for Comic Relief. There were some amazing hairstyles and we loved seeing their individual styles!

Week ending 8th March 2024

We have been incredibly impressed with the children’s efforts in their assessments this week. They have all worked extremely hard and should be so proud of themselves. In science, the children have been exploring how sound travel through different mediums. The children got very excited when making their cup and string telephones to investigate how vibrations travel through the string.  Finally, they really enjoyed world book day. They looked amazing in their costumes.

Week ending 1st March
We have had a fantastic week in Year 3/4. In our English lessons, we have been exploring and writing kennings. In Maths, the children have started their unit of work on fractions. As well as our learning in the classroom, we had a brilliantly forest school session. The children explored all of the outdoor learning activities and loved the experience. The children immersed themselves in a range of activities such as, lighting fires, gardening, blindfold partner work, nature hunt and creating nature pictures.

Week ending 16th February

The children have had a great final week of the half term. We have finished our pavilion structures by adding cladding to them using different methods including weaving strips of cardboard. In English, we have been so impressed with their stories inspired by the book 'Jemmy Button'. The children wrote their own stories where Jemmy visited them and they took him on adventures around St Neots. They made their stories exciting and showed great awareness of the reader. In Computing, we have been amazed by their understanding of coding on Scratch. They have used complicated coding blocks to create times table games and are definitely better than us! We have been really proud of them this half term and we hope that you all have a good week off. There is no requirement to do Maths Whizz and TT Rock Stars over the holidays. We have an optional half term reading challenge which we have posted here. We have also included an information sheet about the benefits of reading with your child at home.

Week Ending 9th February

We have had such a busy week in Years 3 and 4. The children have been working really hard constructing their pavilions. They have shown great skill, patience and perseverance in joining materials together in their construction with no one ending up stuck to their buildings (just quite a bit of glue over the tables!) We are really looking forward to seeing how they turn out when completed next week. In other areas of the curriculum, both Years 3 and 4 have continued to develop their understanding of measuring and calculating perimeter. In English, we have been incredibly impressed with their writing. We have written setting descriptions, diaries and letters this week. The improvements that they have made in their writing so far this year have been fantastic. We are looking forward to their stories next week.

Week Ending 2nd February
This week has been a busy week of learning for all of Year 3/4! In English, we have focused our learning on starting our sentences in a range of way. This has made our writing more interesting. In Maths, the children have started their unit of work based on measuring. They have enjoyed practically measuring items using different units of measure. The children have spent time in Science exploring evaporation and condensing and the variables which enhance or delay these processes. In our History lesson, we explored how mummification works. We carried out a practical experiment of mummifying a tomato. Over the next few weeks, the children will make observations of their mummified tomato.

Week Ending 26th January

This week has been a busy week of learning for all of Year 3/4! In English, we have been planning and writing our own playscripts written around the silent clip, 'The Wishgranter'. In Maths, the children have further enhanced their understand of multiplication and division. Some children have spent time looking and multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit numbers and others have been exploring the 'short method' of multiplication and division. The children have spent time in Science exploring freezing and melting and the variables which enhance or delay these processes. In our History lesson, we travelled back into the Ancient Egyptian time period. We were asked by a Pharaoh to build a pyramid and then resolved some of the problems we would have encountered during the building process. The imaginations showcased by the children were utterly impressive!

Week Ending 19th January

We have had a fantastic week in Year 3/4. In our English lessons, we have been exploring and writing play scripts. In Maths, the children have continued to develop methods for multiplication and division. As well as our learning in the classroom, we had a brilliantly Ancient Egyptian day with History off the Page on Wednesday. The children all looked fantastic in their costumes and became completely immersed in the experience. In the morning, the children visited stalls in the Valley of the Death and made lots of different Ancient Egyptian crafts such as perfume, canopic jars, praying bracelets, tomb paintings and mummification. During the afternoon, we had a royal court and banquet. They performed dances and plays as part of this court to the pharaoh and queen. They all had a brilliant day and we were so proud how they transported themselves back to Ancient Egyptian times.

Week Ending 12th January

Happy New Year! The children have had a great first week back. They have got stuck right back into their learning this week. At the end of the week, the children started to look at playscripts in preparation for next week's learning. In Maths, they have been deepening their understanding of multiplication and division using informal methods. They have also been looking at money and how to use it. Across the rest of the curriculum, the children had a great time using Scratch and making codes to animate characters. Finally, they had a great time in DT creating structures using midget gems and cocktail sticks! We were so impressed with the structures that they created.
