Summer 2023

July 2023

English

In English, our work has been focused around myths. The children have read a variety of different myths and explored the characters within these. They have thoroughly enjoyed learning about this different kind of story. In our Gramma lessons, we have focused on how to organise our writing into paragraphs. The children then used this knowledge to write their own myths about a character that they created to defeat the evil Nian from Chinese mythology.

Maths

In Year 3, they have been collecting data from the children in their maths class and presenting it in bars and pictograms. They then moved on to learning about shape and patterns. In Year 2, the children have been learning about statistics. They have been completing tally charts and pictograms. Furthermore, they have been answering questions about graphs.

Science

In science we have been learning about different famous scientists. The children have looked at the life and work of Marie Curie. They had to find out facts about her and write a fact file.

Topic

In the classroom, the children have been taking part in a Lego building challenge which has been sponsored by Bosch. The children have worked in teams to build a variety of models. After that, they used software to program the motors to make the models move.

June 2023

English

In English, our work has been focused around poetry. The children have looked at a variety of poems which use imaginative language. They wrote their own poem about a monster they created using similes. After that, they listened to ‘The Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll. They found the poem fascinating because he uses nonsense words that he has made up to describe the creature. They then created their own creature and had great fun making up their own words to describe them.

Maths

In Year 3, the children have been developing their understanding of telling the time. They have learnt how to tell the time to the minute and have progressed to calculating problems involving time. In Year 2, the children have been learning new methods for addition and subtraction. They have done absolutely brilliantly learning how to set out the column method and calculating using this.

Science

In Science, we have continued our learning about plants. They have been looking in detail at the parts of a flower and beginning to understand pollination. We have been really impressed with how they understood how the different parts of the flower play a part in making new flowers

Topic

In the classroom, the children have been completing different tasks. In Amber class, they have been learning how to make paper and have created paintings on the paper they have made. In Emerald class, the children have been learning how to sew and have made cushions. In Ruby class, they have been learning about the pentatonic scale and creating their own melodies to play on glockenspiels.

May 2023

Maths

In Maths, the children in Year 2 children have been busy learning about fractions and time. They are able to work out fractions of a number and can tell the time to 5 minutes. In Year 3, they have been learning about fractions and money. They identified the different coins and notes and then used this knowledge to solve calculation problems involving money.

English

In English, our work has been focused around the text ‘The Green Ship’ by Quentin Blake. The children enjoyed innovating the story by creating their own green mode of transport! They then planned and wrote their own adventure stories for the children from ‘The Green Ship’. We were really impressed with how they are now using different sentence structures in their writing.

Science

In Science, we have started our new topic about plants. The children have identified and labelled the different parts of a flowering plant. After that, they learnt about the different jobs each part of the plant does. They were able to confidently describe these and write descriptions for each.

Topic

This half term, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about our new topic ‘There’s no place like home’. In the ICE zone, they have been learning all about physical and human geographical features and labelling what can be found in St Neots. In the classroom, they have been learning about Chinese food. They enjoyed tasting a variety of different food from China and then made their own spring rolls.
