Summer 2023

June 2023

English

We have based our English learning around with the traditional tale of ‘The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse’. The children have learnt the story and have been describing and comparing the two settings using their senses. They have loved using the word reflective in their writing  to describe the calm water in the countryside. They have also re-invented the story with a link to our ICE Zone topic about China. The Country Mouse went to visit the City Mouse in Shanghai. The children planned their stories ensuring that it had a beginning, middle and end. They then used this plan to write their own stories. Their finished pieces included fantastic adjectives and a great new character.

Maths

The children have been learning about place value to 100 in Maths. They have been recognising the numbers brilliantly and partitioning them into tens and ones. They then found one more and one less than a number. They loved playing bingo to practice this skill, they could only dab their number if it was one more or one less than the number that was called. There was much excitement! Finally, the children have used <, > and = symbols to show which numbers are less than, greater than or the same as other numbers.

Science

The children have used their knowledge of properties of materials to design and make clothes for an explorer to wear in the rainforest. They thought about the material being warm or cool and decided it definitely needed to be waterproof. They then had great fun testing their clothes on a rainforest obstacle course outside before evaluating the results.

English

We began our term writing a non-chronological report about our walk. The children were great at writing about what we had seen in our local area. We had to organise our ideas into different categories and the children loved using the photos they had taken to add extra information. The last two weeks has seen the children focus on the classic picture book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. The children have been amazing at having a rumpus! They have described the feeling of the main character and learnt the story brilliantly.

Maths

The children have been learning about grouping and sharing in maths. They have had to make sure that their answers are equal and fair and have been great at problem solving to ensure this happens. The children began by using resources to solve the problems and then moved on to drawings to work out their answers. They are now beginning to use this knowledge to find a half of a shape or quantity. We have focused on half or not half to check the pieces are equal.

Science

We began the term finishing our unit about humans. The children named lots of different body parts and then explored our outside area to investigate senses. They particularly enjoyed using their sense of smell in the herb area. The children are now beginning their unit of learning about materials, they have been sorting materials with great attention to detail.

Topic

Our topic this term is 'There's no place like home'. We have begun this topic by learning about the home element of our topic. The children began by looking at maps of our local area and creating their own maps of the school grounds and some of their favourite journeys. They used a variety of materials to add in additional details too. Once we were a little familiar with routes near school we all went on walk to look at the environment in or local area. We looked at physical and human features and the children then drew maps to show what we had seen. The children were impeccably behaved on their trip out.
